Police name nurse killed in train tragedy

A MAN who died when he was struck by a train between Higham and Gravesend has been identified by British Transport Police.

He was 44-year-old Richard Ormiston, a mental health nurse, from Aintree Close, Gravesend.

He was hit by a Southeastern train at the Hoo junction near the Shornemead Crossing, at about 10.20am on Thursday, June 7.

The driver of the 9.22am service between Charing Cross and Gillingham saw Mr Ormiston on the tracks and used the emergency brakes. But the train was travelling at around 70mph and unable to stop.

British Transport Police are treating the death as non-suspicious. Mr Ormiston was declared dead at the scene.

A Southeastern spokesman said: “Incidents of this kind are inevitably very distressing and Southeastern extends its sympathy to the family and friends of the person who died.”
