Suspected loan shark arrested

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of illegal money lending.

The 66-year-old was arrested an undisclosed address in Gravesend following an operation on Tuesday.

The England Illegal Money Lending Team working in partnership with Kent County Council executed the warrant seizing documentation.

The suspect was questioned and released on bail until May 30 whilst further enquires are carried out.

KCC cabinet member for customers and communities Mike Hill said: “This successful arrest is an excellent example of how the county council’s Trading Standards officers are working alongside the Illegal Money Lending team to crackdown on loan sharks.

"I hope this sends a strong message to those involved in this activity that Kent is no place for them.”

Nationally the Illegal Money Lending Teams have secured 222 prosecutions for illegal money lending and related activity, leading to more than 150 years worth of custodial sentences.

They have written off almost £40 million worth of illegal debt and helped over 19,000 victims.
