A 28-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after being attacked in the county.

Police have made four arrests in connection with the incident - which happened at around 11.30pm Friday in the Five Bells Lane area, between Rochester and Chatham High Street and New Road.

The victim suffered head injuries and was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital at Gillingham.

Det Insp Andy Pritchard, who is leading the investigation, said police were able to make early arrests. He added: "We are viewing CCTV from the area and undertaking house to house inquiries."

Police are appealing for witnesses and are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area between 11.20pm and midnight on the night of the attack.

According to police, the incident is being treated as isolated and nobody else is being sought in connection with the assault.
