Council reveals £300,000 cost of unpaid rent

COUNCIL chiefs have issued a warning to tenants falling behind with their rent - pay up or risk losing your home.

Every year Medway Council runs a campaign targetted at people living in council accommodation. It is aimed at encouraging them to ensure their rent is paid and on time.

Last year (2006) rent arrears in Medway reached £300,000 and 10 tenants were evicted because they hadn’t paid their rent.

The council’s latest rent campaign begins this month. It includes advertising on buses, at bus shelters, posters, leaflets and mobile billboards.

It also includes advertising on rent statements and there is a banner at the entrance to Municipal Buildings.

The campaign has been specifically targeted at the Gillingham area, which is where the council owns more than 3,000 properties.

The council tries to be sympathetic to tenants who are having problems paying their rent, but when arrears build up it will take action that could result in you losing your home.

Medway’s portfolio holder for adult services Cllr Tom Mason said: “We have worked hard to make sure there are lots of different ways in which people can pay their rent.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for our tenants so that arrears do not build up at any time of the year. It’s surprising how quickly arrears can build up, so it’s best not to let that happen.’’

Tenants who are having trouble keeping up with rent payments should phone the Housing Support Team on 01634 333600.
