Five fire crews worked through last night to battle a haystack fire more than 100ft wide.

Firefighters were called just after midnight to farmland in Stoke Road, between Lower Stoke and Allhallows on the Hoo Peninsula.

The crews from Strood, Grain, Hoo and Medway prevented the fire spreading to further haystacks, fields and hedgerows.

Flames were more than 10ft high at its height, and one crew was still on the scene at 9am today.

A water unit and command support unit from Maidstone were also in attendance.

The blaze destroyed six out of seven haystacks which were grouped together in the field, weighing 250 tonnes. Police are treating it as suspicious.

Ian Crouch, crew manager at Medway Fire Station, said: "The smoke could be seen from a long way away. It was hard work but we managed to prevent further spread."
