Tom Wynter could make a surprise debut for Gillingham in their Boxing Day clash against Brentford.

Mark Stimson is without left-sided central defender Matt Fry, who serves a one-game ban, and Wynter, pictured, may replace him.

Wynter, 19, is a product of the youth team and is naturally left-sided, which would keep the Gills’ defence balanced.

Stimson said: "Matt Fry has been a rock but it might help in one sense, because he has been carrying a bad knee injury. Now he gets a nice break and he’ll be available for Exeter (on Bank Holiday Monday).

"We are quite lucky that Josh Gowling is back but Tom Wynter is waiting and he might be given a go.

"Brentford are quite direct and you have to be up for the physical element and Tom certainly doesn’t lack in that department. We’ll have a look and see who is available and who gets through this week’s training and make a decision.

"He had a loan spell out and did well. Dover wanted to keep him but I brought him back because we needed him."
