No home comfort for jittery Gillingham

GILLINGHAM'S relegation woes deepened on Tuesday night as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat at home to Wigan (Jason Kayley writes).

Alan Pouton warmed John Filan's hands with a fierce volley from the edge of the area. But Wigan took the lead when Nathan Ellington smashed home Jimmy Bullard's free kick in the 33rd minute.

Jason Roberts doubled their lead when he held off Chris Hope and lashed the ball home on the turn from six yards.

Gills never got going and went 3-0 down in the 67th minute when Andy Liddell crossed for the unmarked Alan Mahon to flash his header past Steve Banks.

Sub Matt Jarvis had a shot well saved by Filan but that was all Gills had to offer on a poor night at Priestfield.
