CARTHY: Enjoyed a loan spell at Park View Road last season

WELLING manager Adrian Pennock will find out on Friday if his number one transfer target Martin Carthy has decided to join the club.

Carthy has to choose between signing for the Wings or Conference South rivals Thurrock after being released by last season’s champions Grays Athletic.

Thurrock are favourites to land Carthy after putting together an impressive finanical package. But Pennock is hoping that Carthy’s enjoyable loan spell at Park View Road last season, when he scored five goals in seven games, will tempt the midfielder to opt for Welling.

Pennock said: "I can’t compete with what Thurrock are offering but I’ve sold Martin the club and made his decision very difficult.

"He was going to decide last week but he enjoyed his time here last season so much that he wants longer to make his mind up."

Part of the package offered to Carthy includes a donation made to the club by Welling supporters, who also helped secure the signature of Matt Carruthers from Dover last week.

Carruthers signed a one-year contract with Welling in a deal which saw Lee Spiller, Tony Browne and Tommy Tyne all moving in the opposite direction.

Pennock added: "I’d like to thank the fans for their help. Matt is a player I tried to sign in my first week as Welling manager. He is a great signing, can play either side of midfield or up front and can deliver a great ball."

Pennock stated that the only Welling player who wanted to leave the club was James Smith, although he would not be allowed to go unless the Wings receive a substantial offer.

Jamie Day has been approached by Barnet but the player has pledged his future to Welling and Pennock is not expecting any further moves for the midfielder.

"As it is, Jamie doesn’t want to leave and is enjoying his football since I’ve been in charge and he is going to be a crucial part of my plans this season," said Pennock.
