An armed unit was on the scene, at the junction with The Brook, and patrol cars blocked off the surrounding area.

A 30-year-old man from Rochester has been arrested.

A spokesman for Kent Police said no weapon has yet been found and enquiries are ongoing.

One eyewitness who saw police arrest the man said it all seemed to be over in a matter of moments.

He said: "I was standing outside the pub talking to a friend and police cars came round the corner the second this guy stepped out of the pub."

Several police cars remained on the scene until the road was reopened just after 6.30pm.
