A man suspected of stealing an elderly woman’s handbag has been arrested “within minutes” of it being reported.

Police were called at 7.39am today after a man was seen assaulting the victim, in her 70s, in Gillingham High Street before he fleeing with her bag.

Officers attended the area and a man who matched the description of the suspect was arrested in Skinner Street at 7.50am. The victim’s handbag was also recovered.

The suspect, a 25-year-old man from Gillingham, was arrested on suspicion of robbery.

He remains in custody while inquiries continue.

Police have given their thanks to members of the public who helped the victim during the incident.
