Luis Cumbers described his first goal for Gillingham as a special moment. He rounded off the scoring in Saturday’s 4-0 drubbing of Rotherham.

The 20-year-old found the net in the 88th minute after coming on as a late substitute.

He said: “It’s a great achievement and hopefully I can score more and get more opportunities.

“Scoring goals is what I want to do, whether it’s in the league or not, it’s what I love to do.”

Cumbers has been loaned to several non-league sides in the last two seasons, including Maidstone, Grays and AFC Wimbledon and scored regularly at them all, but it was his strike on Saturday which meant the most.

He said: “The first career goal in first team football in the league is something I will always remember.”

As well as scoring his first goal, Cumbers also picked up his first senior booking.

“I’m not sure why I got booked to be honest,” he said. “I don’t think I over celebrated, I think I just got dragged in by a few of the supporters."
